What Part 1 tests, and how the exam day is structured
Part 1 covers the planning-and-control side of management accounting. Where Part 2 leans strategic — financial statement analysis, corporate finance, decision analysis — Part 1 tests whether you can build and flex a budget, explain a variance, cost a product under more than one method, evaluate an internal control environment, and speak the language of data and analytics. The IMA's Content Specification Outlines (CSOs) define six content domains for the part, each with a published percentage weight; the next section lists all six.
The format, per the IMA's published exam materials, is a four-hour sitting in two stages: 100 multiple-choice questions with a three-hour allowance, followed by two essay scenarios with a one-hour allowance. The multiple-choice section comes first; the essays present short business situations with data and ask for written answers and calculations in response.
Three practical points about scheduling. First, the two CMA parts may be taken in either order — nothing requires you to sit Part 1 before Part 2, so choose the part closer to your strengths. Second, the exam is offered in three testing windows each year: January/February, May/June and September/October. The six content domains and their official weights
The IMA publishes the domains and weights for Part 1 in its Content Specification Outlines. The weights matter because they are the closest thing you have to a map of how the 100 multiple-choice questions are distributed — and therefore how your study hours should be distributed.

Two observations follow directly from the table. The two 20% domains — budgeting and performance management — together account for two fifths of the part, and they are also the most computational, which is why the worked examples later in this guide come from them. And no domain is small enough to skip: at 15% each, even the lightest domains represent a substantial slice of the multiple-choice section, so a strategy of writing off a weak area is a strategy of giving away marks.
Concepts to master, domain by domain
The CSOs are the authoritative topic list; what follows is a plain-English inventory of the concepts within each domain that carry the most weight in practice questions and essays. Use it as a checklist, not a substitute for the official outlines.
External Financial Reporting Decisions (15%)
- U.S. GAAP recognition basics — when revenue is recognised, how assets and liabilities are initially measured, and what belongs in each financial statement. Part 1 tests reporting from a decision-maker's perspective rather than a preparer's, but you still need the recognition and measurement rules cold.
- The structure and purpose of the income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows and statement of changes in equity, and how common transactions flow through them.
- Valuation and measurement topics such as receivables, inventory cost-flow assumptions, and the treatment of long-lived assets.
Planning, Budgeting, and Forecasting (20%)
- Budgeting approaches — the master budget and its component schedules, plus alternatives such as zero-based, rolling (continuous) and activity-based budgeting, with the trade-offs of each.
- Flexible budgets — restating the budget for the activity level actually achieved, the foundation for meaningful variance analysis.
- Forecasting techniques — regression analysis, learning curves and expected value, and when each is the right tool.
- Strategic planning concepts that frame the budget: mission, objectives and how annual plans link to longer-term strategy.
Performance Management (20%)
- Variance analysis — decomposing the difference between actual and budgeted results into sales-volume, price, efficiency and spending components, and explaining what each signals about operations.
- Responsibility centers — cost, revenue, profit and investment centers, and matching the performance measure to what a manager actually controls.
- The balanced scorecard — financial, customer, internal-process and learning-and-growth perspectives, and building measures that connect to strategy.
- Investment-center metrics and their behavioural effects, including the incentive problems a single ratio can create.
Cost Management (15%)
- Costing systems — job-order costing, process costing and activity-based costing (ABC): the mechanics of each and, more importantly, which production environment each fits.
- Overhead allocation — plant-wide versus departmental rates, cost-driver selection, and how a poor allocation base distorts reported product costs (see the second worked example below).
- Cost behaviour and terminology: variable, fixed, mixed, direct and indirect costs, and supply-chain and lean concepts as they appear in the outlines.
Internal Controls (15%)
- The COSO internal control framework — its components and principles, and how they translate into control objectives for real processes.
- Systems controls — general and application controls over information systems, segregation of duties, and security measures that protect the integrity of financial data.
- Governance, risk and compliance concepts, including the roles of the board, audit committee and internal audit.
Technology and Analytics (15%)
- Data governance — data life cycles, quality, stewardship and controls over the data that feeds financial reporting and analysis.
- Analytics concepts — descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive analytics; what a regression output or a visualisation is telling you; and where techniques can mislead.
- Information systems and finance transformation topics: ERP systems, automation and how technology reshapes the finance function.
How to handle the essay hour
After the multiple-choice section, you face two scenario-based essay questions with a combined one-hour allowance — so plan on roughly thirty minutes per scenario. Each scenario presents a short business situation with data, then asks a series of numbered questions: some computational (prepare a flexible budget, compute a variance), some written (explain, recommend, interpret). You answer in a text box.
Four habits make the hour manageable:
- Plan before you type. Read every requirement of the scenario first, note which are calculations and which are prose, and budget your minutes across them. A scenario's later questions often build on the earlier ones, so a moment of orientation prevents rework.
- Show your calculations, labelled. Write out the formula, the inputs and the result on separate lines with words attached — for example, naming a figure as the flexible-budget contribution margin rather than presenting a bare number. Organised working is easier for a grader to follow than a number dump.
- Write clearly and simply. The IMA's published guidance describes essay responses as evaluated on both correctness and the clarity of expression. Short paragraphs, one point each, in plain business English beat long unstructured prose. You are writing an answer, not an article.
- Adopt a partial-credit mindset. Attempt every part of every requirement, even when unsure. A structured attempt that states its assumptions and gets partway through a method is worth writing; a blank box is worth nothing. Never leave a requirement empty because an earlier step felt shaky — carry your figures forward and keep going.
The best preparation is unglamorous: practise full scenarios against a thirty-minute clock, typing your answers, from the midpoint of your study plan onwards. The format stops being intimidating once it is familiar.
Where candidates find Part 1 difficult
Difficulty is personal — it depends on your background — but a few friction points come up consistently, and naming them early helps you plan around them.
- Breadth across six domains. No single domain is conceptually extreme, but Part 1 spans financial reporting, budgeting, performance, costing, controls and technology. Candidates from a narrow role often find one or two domains entirely unfamiliar, and those unfamiliar domains still carry 15–20% each.
- Quantitative fluency under time pressure. Three hours for 100 multiple-choice questions averages under two minutes per question. Variance and costing questions are not hard individually; doing them quickly, repeatedly, without transposition errors is the real skill, and it only comes from drilling.
- The essay format itself. Candidates who prepare only with multiple-choice questions meet the constructed-response format for the first time on exam day. Writing organised, labelled answers under a clock is a separate skill from knowing the content.
- External reporting for non-reporting people. Management accountants who have never closed a set of books can find the U.S. GAAP recognition and measurement material dry and detailed. It rewards steady, early coverage rather than a late cram.
- New vocabulary in technology and analytics. The domain is more conceptual than computational, but its terminology — governance frameworks, analytics categories, systems concepts — is easy to underestimate because it does not feel like accounting.
Two worked examples
Both examples below were written by Certuvo to illustrate the style of Part 1 computation. Each is labelled accordingly and neither is drawn from any exam.
Example A — flexible-budget and sales-volume variances
Original Certuvo example — not from any actual exam.
Marlin Co. budgets a selling price of $50 per unit, variable cost of $30 per unit and fixed costs of $120,000. The static budget assumed 10,000 units; 11,000 units were actually sold.

Actual operating income exactly equals the static budget, so a naive reading says nothing happened. The flexible budget says otherwise. First, restate the budget at the actual volume of 11,000 units:
- Flexible-budget operating income = 11,000 units × ($50 − $30 budgeted contribution per unit) − $120,000 fixed = $220,000 − $120,000 = $100,000.
- Sales-volume variance = flexible-budget income − static-budget income = $100,000 − $80,000 = $20,000 favourable. Selling 1,000 more units than planned should have added 1,000 × $20 of contribution margin.
- Flexible-budget variance = actual income − flexible-budget income = $80,000 − $100,000 = $20,000 unfavourable.
The unfavourable flexible-budget variance decomposes cleanly: a selling-price variance of ($49 − $50) × 11,000 = $11,000 unfavourable, a variable-cost variance of ($31 − $30) × 11,000 = $11,000 unfavourable, and a fixed-cost variance of $118,000 − $120,000 = $2,000 favourable. Together: −$11,000 − $11,000 + $2,000 = −$20,000, which offsets the $20,000 favourable volume effect exactly. The lesson Part 1 wants you to internalise: extra volume masked genuine price and cost slippage, and only a flexible budget reveals it.
Example B — activity-based costing versus a volume-based rate
Original Certuvo example — not from any actual exam.
Torel Ltd. makes a high-volume Standard product (8,000 units) and a low-volume Custom product (2,000 units). Each unit of either product uses 0.5 direct labour hours, so the products consume 4,000 and 1,000 direct labour hours respectively — 5,000 in total. Total manufacturing overhead is $150,000, held in three activity pools:

Traditional volume-based allocation. A single plant-wide rate of $150,000 ÷ 5,000 direct labour hours = $30 per hour assigns 0.5 × $30 = $15 of overhead per unit to both products.
Activity-based costing. Compute a rate per pool, then charge each product for the activity it consumes:
- Setups: $60,000 ÷ 60 setups = $1,000 per setup. Standard: 20 × $1,000 = $20,000; Custom: 40 × $1,000 = $40,000.
- Inspection: $40,000 ÷ 500 hours = $80 per hour. Standard: 200 × $80 = $16,000; Custom: 300 × $80 = $24,000.
- Machining: $50,000 ÷ 5,000 machine hours = $10 per hour. Standard: 3,000 × $10 = $30,000; Custom: 2,000 × $10 = $20,000.
- Totals: Standard $66,000 ÷ 8,000 units = $8.25 per unit; Custom $84,000 ÷ 2,000 units = $42.00 per unit. (Check: $66,000 + $84,000 = $150,000.)
The volume-based rate over-costs the high-volume Standard product by $6.75 per unit and under-costs the low-volume Custom product by $27.00 per unit, because setups and inspection are driven by batch complexity rather than labour hours. Pricing or line-profitability decisions made on the $15 figure would quietly have the Standard line subsidising the Custom line.
A realistic study approach
Three principles organise an effective Part 1 plan better than any fixed hour count, because the right total depends on your background and schedule.
- Sequence and size your effort in proportion to the weights. The two 20% domains — Planning, Budgeting, and Forecasting and Performance Management — deserve the largest blocks and an early start, since later material builds on them. The four 15% domains follow, ordered by your personal weakness rather than by the outline's numbering. Revisit the weights table whenever you are tempted to over-invest in a comfortable topic.
- Alternate quantitative drills with theory. Variance, budgeting and costing skills decay quickly, so interleave: a theory-reading session on, say, COSO or data governance should be followed by a timed set of computational multiple-choice questions from an earlier domain. This spaced mixing is slower per session and much stronger by exam day than blocking each domain once and moving on.
- Build an essay cadence. From roughly the midpoint of your plan, write one full essay scenario per week under a thirty-minute clock, typing the answer and labelling every calculation as described in the essay-strategy section. In the final weeks, move to complete four-hour simulations so the multiple-choice-to-essay transition is rehearsed, not novel.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Studying domains in isolation and never mixing. Blocked study feels productive, but the exam interleaves everything; practise mixed question sets well before exam week.
- Ignoring the essays until the end. The constructed-response format needs its own practice cadence. Discovering on exam day that you cannot organise a written answer in thirty minutes is entirely avoidable.
- Memorising variance formulas without the logic. Questions routinely rearrange the setup — solving for a missing input, or asking what a variance means. If you can rebuild the flexible-budget logic from scratch, as in Example A, the formulas take care of themselves.
- Skipping the lighter domains. At 15% each, internal controls, technology and analytics, external reporting and cost management are not optional. A weak domain of that size is a large, predictable hole in your score.
- Practising untimed. Accuracy without pace does not survive an average of under two minutes per multiple-choice question. Introduce the clock early and keep it.
- Leaving essay requirements blank. Attempt every part, state your assumptions, and carry figures forward even when an earlier step is uncertain — a structured partial answer always beats an empty box.
- Planning around the wrong calendar. The exam runs in three testing windows, not year-round. Anchor your plan to a specific window and its registration deadlines from the start.
