The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) credential, awarded by the IMA (Institute of Management Accountants), is built around a two-part exam covering financial planning, performance, analytics and strategic financial management. This hub explains the exam's official structure, the eligibility route defined in the CMA Handbook, and the study and cost-planning tools that support the deep part-by-part guides below.

What the CMA is and who it serves
The CMA is a professional certification in management accounting and financial management. Where the CPA licence centres on public accounting, audit and external reporting, the CMA is aimed at accountants and finance professionals who work inside organisations: financial planning and analysis (FP&A), budgeting and forecasting, cost and performance management, internal controls, and decision support for operating managers.
It tends to suit candidates building careers in corporate finance, FP&A, cost accounting, controllership or business partnering — roles where the day-to-day work is explaining performance, building budgets and models, and informing decisions rather than issuing audit opinions. The two certifications are not mutually exclusive; some professionals hold both, and the right choice depends on the career you want, not on which exam is easier.
The two-part exam structure
The CMA exam has two parts, and — per the IMA's published exam materials — you may sit them in either order. You must pass both, within the program's time limits described in the CMA Handbook, to earn the credential.
- Part 1 — Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics. Six content domains spanning external financial reporting decisions; planning, budgeting and forecasting; performance management; cost management; internal controls; and technology and analytics. Our Part 1 guide covers every domain with its official weight.
- Part 2 — Strategic Financial Management. The strategic and decision-oriented half of the syllabus, covering areas such as financial statement analysis, corporate finance, decision analysis, risk management, investment decisions and professional ethics as defined in the IMA's Content Specification Outlines.
Each part is a four-hour exam: 100 multiple-choice questions with a three-hour allowance, followed by two essay scenarios with a one-hour allowance. The IMA offers the exam in three testing windows each year — January/February, May/June and September/October — with registration and scheduling details set out in the CMA Handbook.
Eligibility and the CMA program
Passing the two exam parts is necessary but not sufficient. The CMA Handbook defines the full route to certification, which includes joining the IMA as a member, entering the CMA program (an entrance fee applies), meeting an education requirement, and completing two years of relevant professional experience. The Handbook is the authoritative source for what counts as qualifying education and experience, the time limits for completing the program, and the documentation the IMA requires — read it before you register rather than relying on second-hand summaries, including ours.
Because fees change and vary by membership category, we do not print dollar amounts in our guides. Use the certification cost calculator, which itemises the cost components and links to the IMA's official fee pages for current figures.
How the essay section works
The essay hour is the part of the CMA exam that most surprises candidates coming from multiple-choice-only certifications. In each part you face two scenario-based essay questions: each presents a short business situation with data, then asks a series of written and computational questions about it. You respond in a text box — showing calculations, explaining reasoning and making recommendations.
The IMA's published guidance describes essay responses as being evaluated on both the correctness of the answer and the clarity with which it is expressed, which rewards organised, labelled working over unstructured number dumps. Our Part 1 guide includes a dedicated essay-strategy section and an original worked mini-scenario in that format.
Planning your attempt
Two free tools support CMA planning:
- Exam study-plan generator — builds a week-by-week schedule from your available hours, background and target testing window, so you can see whether a given window is realistic before you book it.
- Certification cost calculator — walks through the cost components of the CMA program (membership, entrance fee, exam fees, study materials) with links to the IMA's official fee schedules.
A practical sequencing note: since the parts may be taken in either order, many candidates start with the part closer to their day job — Part 1 for those in budgeting, cost or reporting roles; Part 2 for those in corporate finance or analysis roles. Whichever you choose, plan around the three annual testing windows rather than assuming year-round availability.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take CMA Part 2 before Part 1?
Yes. The IMA allows the two parts to be taken in either order. The numbering reflects the syllabus organisation, not a required sequence — choose the part that best matches your current strengths or work experience.
How long is each CMA exam part?
Each part is four hours: 100 multiple-choice questions with a three-hour allowance, followed by two essay scenarios with a one-hour allowance.
Do I need to be an IMA member to sit the CMA exam?
Yes. The CMA Handbook requires IMA membership and entry into the CMA program before you can register for the exam, alongside education and experience requirements for final certification. The Handbook is the authoritative source for the details.
When can I sit the CMA exam?
The IMA offers the exam in three testing windows each year: January/February, May/June and September/October. Registration deadlines and scheduling rules are set out in the CMA Handbook.
