What the CFA Program is — and who it's for
The CFA Program is CFA Institute's graduate-level credential for investment professionals — more than 200,000 charterholders hold it across more than 160 markets. It is the standard credential for careers in investment management, research and analysis: portfolio managers, research analysts, and increasingly risk and advisory roles that sit close to investment decisions.
Its centre of gravity is different from the accounting credentials in this library. The CPA is anchored in financial reporting and U.S. licensure and the CMA in management accounting; the CFA charter is anchored in investment analysis and portfolio management, with a famously heavy ethics component at every level. It is also a genuinely multi-year commitment — three sequential exams plus a work-experience requirement — so honest planning matters more here than almost anywhere else in this library.
The three levels: same curriculum spine, escalating demands
Per CFA Institute's official exam pages, the three levels share a curriculum but test it differently:
- Level I — foundations. 180 multiple-choice questions across two 135-minute sessions (4.5 hours of testing). Free-standing questions test terms, concepts and formulas — CFA Institute suggests budgeting about 90 seconds per question.
- Level II — analysis and application. 22 item sets (vignettes) with 88 multiple-choice questions over two sessions of 2 hours 12 minutes. Every question hangs off its vignette: you read a scenario like an analyst and answer from it. Twenty item sets are scored; two are unscored trial sets.
- Level III — synthesis and judgement. 11 item sets plus 11 constructed-response (essay) sets over the same 4-hour-24-minute session structure. This is where candidates first write answers rather than select them, and where a specialized pathway enters the picture.
Levels must be passed in order. Level I is offered four times a year, Level II three times, and Level III twice — and CFA Institute limits candidates to two attempts per calendar year, never in windows less than six months apart.
Official topic weights: where the exam's gravity sits
CFA Institute publishes topic outlines with official weight ranges for each level. The 2026 Level I ranges:
| Topic area | Weight |
|---|---|
| Ethical and Professional Standards | 15–20% |
| Quantitative Methods | 6–9% |
| Economics | 6–9% |
| Financial Statement Analysis | 11–14% |
| Corporate Issuers | 6–9% |
| Equity Investments | 11–14% |
| Fixed Income | 11–14% |
| Derivatives | 5–8% |
| Alternative Investments | 7–10% |
| Portfolio Management | 8–12% |
Level II re-weights the same topic set toward analysis (ethics, financial statement analysis, equity, fixed income and portfolio management each carry 10–15% ranges in the 2026 outline). At Level III, candidates choose one of three pathways — Portfolio Management, Private Wealth, or Private Markets — with the common core carrying 65–70% of exam weight and the chosen pathway 30–35%. The official topic outlines on CFA Institute's curriculum pages are the authoritative reference and are updated each curriculum year.
Practical Skills Modules: the requirement that voids results if skipped
Since their introduction, Practical Skills Modules (PSMs) have been a gating requirement: you must complete at least one PSM at each level by the results release date, or your exam result is voided— no pass or fail is issued. The modules are ungraded, take roughly 10–20 hours, and the same module cannot be reused across levels. Options differ by level (for example, Financial Modeling or Python Programming Fundamentals at Level I), and Level III modules align with the three pathways. Treat the PSM as part of the exam calendar, not an optional extra — candidates have lost exam results to this rule.
Getting in, and what the charter actually requires
To enrol at Level I, CFA Institute's policies require one of: a completed bachelor's degree (or equivalent); current undergraduate status with your selected exam window no more than 23 months before your graduation month; or 4,000 hours of professional work experience and/or higher education acquired over at least three sequential years. A valid international travel passport is required to register and sit.
To earn the charter, passing all three levels is necessary but not sufficient: you also need 4,000 hours of qualified work experience acquired over a minimum of 36 months — work directly involved in or adding value to investment decision-making — plus professional references and CFA Institute membership. The experience can be earned before, during or after the exams, which is why the charter timeline and the exam timeline are different questions.
Costs, and what CFA Institute publishes about pass rates
CFA Institute eliminated the one-time enrollment fee effective April 2025 (applying from February 2026 exams onward) and states that completing all three levels costs USD 3,520–4,600 depending on whether you register early or standard in each window. Per-window fees are published in the official dates and fees tool — use it rather than third-party fee tables, and note the non-refundable USD 250 rescheduling fee if you move an appointment within a window.
On difficulty, we quote only what CFA Institute itself publishes: recent official results releases report Level I pass rates in the 39–45% range across 2026 windows, with a ten-year Level I average of 40%, and Level II and III running higher. The official exam-results page carries the current figures and the full history — treat any other number as commentary.
How Certuvo's CFA coverage works
This hub is the start of Certuvo's CFA library: level-by-level guides are in the pipeline and will publish only after passing the same three-stage editorial review as our CPA, CMA and CIA guides. Our free study-plan generator and cost calculator now model the CFA Program: the planner carries each level's own exam windows — Level I in February, May, August and November, Level II in May, August and November, Level III in February and August — and checks your target dates against them. Everything factual here is dated, reviewed on a schedule, and correctable through our public corrections policy — and because CFA Institute updates the curriculum annually, this hub carries a scheduled review under our blueprint update policy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take CFA exams while still at university?
Yes, within limits: CFA Institute's policies allow undergraduates to register for Level I if the selected exam window is no more than 23 months before their bachelor's graduation month. Degree completion (or the 4,000-hour experience route) is required as you progress. Confirm your situation against the official policies page.
What are the Level III pathways?
At Level III you choose one of three specialized pathways — Portfolio Management, Private Wealth, or Private Markets — layered on a common core. The core carries 65–70% of exam weight and your pathway 30–35%. All three lead to the same charter.
What happens if I skip the Practical Skills Module?
Your exam result is voided — CFA Institute issues no pass/fail if the required PSM isn't completed by the results release date for your window. Build the module's 10–20 hours into your plan alongside the exam itself.
How hard are the exams?
We quote only CFA Institute's own published figures: recent 2026 Level I windows reported pass rates of 39–45%, against a ten-year Level I average of 40%; Levels II and III run higher. The official exam-results page is the authoritative source. What the numbers mean for you depends on preparation — the levels reward sustained, structured study far more than intensity bursts.
Does passing all three exams make me a charterholder?
No. The charter additionally requires 4,000 hours of qualified investment-related work experience over at least 36 months, professional references, and CFA Institute membership. The experience can accumulate before, during or after your exams.
