ACCA qualification resources

The ACCA Qualification is the flagship credential of ACCA — the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants — the global body for professional accountants, with a community ACCA reported in 2024 as passing 250,000 members worldwide alongside hundreds of thousands of students across around 180 countries. Unlike the U.S.-licensure-anchored CPA, ACCA is a portable international qualification: the same exams, ethics module and experience requirement apply wherever you study.

It suits people building careers in financial reporting, audit, tax, management accounting or advisory roles — particularly outside the United States or in internationally mobile careers. It is a longer program than a single-exam certification: plan in years, not months, and treat the non-exam components as first-class parts of the journey rather than afterthoughts.

Per ACCA's official qualification structure, the exams divide into three levels:

• Applied Knowledge (3 exams): Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA) and Financial Accounting (FA). These are two-hour, on-demand computer-based exams you can sit at any time of year, with results shown immediately.
• Applied Skills (6 exams): Corporate and Business Law (LW), Performance Management (PM), Taxation (TX), Financial Reporting (FR), Audit and Assurance (AA) and Financial Management (FM). Apart from LW (also on-demand in its English and global variants), these are session exams.
• Strategic Professional: two compulsory Essentials — Strategic Business Leader (SBL) and Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) — plus two Options chosen from Advanced Financial Management (AFM), Advanced Performance Management (APM), Advanced Taxation (ATX) and Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA). These run 3 hours 15 minutes each, and SBL is a single integrated case-study exam.

Session exams are offered in four sessions a year — March, June, September and December. The pass mark for ACCA Qualification exams is 50%, and Strategic Professional exams allocate 20 of their 100 marks to professional skills — structuring, judgement and communication — not just technical content.

Passing all thirteen exams makes you an ACCA affiliate, not a member. Two further components are compulsory for membership:

• The Ethics and Professional Skills module (EPSM) — around 20 hours across ten units with an end-of-module assessment. ACCA strongly advises completing it before attempting the Strategic Professional exams, because the professional-skills marking at that level draws directly on it.
• The Practical Experience Requirement (PER) — 36 months in a relevant accounting or finance role plus nine performance objectives (five Essentials, four Technical), signed off by a qualified practical experience supervisor. The months need not be continuous or in a single role, and relevant experience from before you registered can count.

The practical consequence: run the PER in parallel with your studies from the start. Candidates who treat it as a post-exam formality routinely add a year or more to their journey waiting for sign-offs they could have collected along the way.

If you hold a relevant prior qualification — an accounting degree, certain diplomas — ACCA may exempt you from some exams. The ceiling is nine papers: the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels only. No exemptions are ever awarded for Strategic Professional exams, and each awarded exemption carries a fee. Check your exact entitlement with ACCA's official exemptions calculator before registering — and think critically about whether to claim every exemption you're offered: skipping a paper also skips the foundation it builds for the harder levels above it.

ACCA's rules give the levels very different clocks. Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills passes never expire. At Strategic Professional, a seven-year limit starts the day you pass your first exam at that level: if you haven't completed all Strategic Professional exams within seven years, passes older than seven years lapse and must be retaken. The planning implication is direct — don't start Strategic Professional until you can sustain steady progress through it.

ACCA's cost model has four recurring parts: a one-off initial registration fee, an annual student subscription (invoiced each November, due 1 January), per-exam fees, and fees for any exemptions awarded. Per-exam fees vary by level, by session, by how early you book (early, standard and late entry), and by country — which is why we deliberately do not print amounts here: any single table would be wrong for most readers. In June 2025 ACCA announced a redesign of the qualification — "Accountancy Redefined" — to be introduced from mid-2027, with new awards and designations, employability modules at each level, and expanded sustainability and AI content. The current structure described on this page remains in force today, and ACCA has published a transition timeline for candidates who will straddle the change.
